BEEN ALREADY

Braşov, Romania

Our Romanian friends recommended we do a day trip to Brasov, a small town to the north of Bucharest, home of the Transylvanian Saxons (Germans who settled in Transylvania). Like previous towns we've been in in Romania and Europe, it's nested within the mountains, feels "alpine", and consists of an old town square, some ruins of castles or fortifications, and of course several churches.

I sometimes forget what Europe is like. People relaxing at cafes, hanging out in the old street, being surrounded by history, and the generally slower pace. In the old town, there was an educational exchange which was being done, in which universities from all over Asia were represented. Hong Kong was there, and so was the Mainland. Some students from Indonesia and Thailand were also doing a Muay Thai demonstration. It was the strangest thing to see, having traveled over a thousand kilometers to Eastern Europe, then getting a taste of home (at the time of writing, I live in Hong Kong). That year living in England, when Thorin and I traveled to a lot of Eastern Europe, seems ages away. I'm quite fond of this place.
