We decided to take a day trip to Braga during our long stay in Porto. Here we go:
The city reminded me a bit of Segovia, with its old town feel and churches. The main town center around Avenida da Liberdade was nice. It was a cute stretch of road surrounded by old, Portuguese style buildings, with the occasional bells ringing from church.
The main attraction, and the one we went for, was Bom Jesus. The Portuguese really knew how to name their churches.. I mean.. Bom Jesus? To the English speaker, it's pretty much like "bomb Jesus," which, if you are a Christian, I'm sure pretty much translates to Jesus is da bomb. Not actually nomb (verb) Jesus. The architecture is stunning, and took the walk up the stairs as opposed to funicular. Was super peaceful and you could see some shrines along the way. Unfortunately, it was raining the whole time. Travel tip, folks, always travel in the rain if you can stand a little wetness. You get to experience the place all quiet and to yourself. I recall the bus ride taking a while to get up and down, so by the time we finished with that and strolled a bit around the town. There was a scavenger hunt on the map they gave us for some statues around town, so we followed that. Anyway, here's pictures from the day, they do more justice than I will ever:
