STAY: THE BRIT HOSTEL

Arriving into Zagreb around midday from Ljubljana, we were immediately struck by how big the city is. Zagreb was historically a very important city, both for Austro-Hungarian empire as well as Yugoslavia. Not only that, but Croatia is the most populous city in the country and the heart of Croatian culture and identity. Consequently, the city is choc-a-bloc with stunning churches and stately buildings. The city is built on 2 levels, with the old city on the upper and the new city on the lower.

We got into the train station, and set out to find our hostel in the heart of the lower part. Then we set out exploring the impressive architecture and winding streets. The upper city is particularly impressive, with winding streets and one large semi-pedestrianised street full of cafes and Balkan style street bars. Very fun, laidback and cheap!

Our plan for Croatia was to drive down from Zagreb to Dubrovnik, stopping by Split on the way, before continuing on public transport to Montenegro. We rented a car in Zagreb that cost us in total ~80€ for two people for three days. Not much more expensive than if we had taken the train! Plus we got to drive through the incredible Croatian landscape, which is truly remarkable. Split here we come!
